Having done nothing to implement its new defence strategy, Moldova seems bent on turning a blind eye to growing threats to its security.
Moldova is still failing to reform and strengthen its defence system, experts have told BIRN, despite a growing security risk from separatists controlling the Transnistrian region as well as from Russian forces stationed there.
Some 1,500 Russian soldiers and about 13,000 active military forces loyal to the secessionist regime in Tiraspol, on the left bank of Dniester River, represent the most immediate threat to the country’s security, Moldova’s latest National Defence Strategy, adopted in July this year, warned.
