The city of Tighina, known as Bender by Transnistrians, was one of the main battlefields in the hot summer of 1992 when, between June 19 and 22, the Moldovan army fought a joint army of Transnistrian rebels, Cossacks, mercenaries and the 14th Russian Army, which was deployed in the region.
In a short time, due to Russia’s military superiority, the Moldovans were quickly defeated.
In the old Soviet propaganda style, the Transnistrians have since built a museum in Tighina/Bender, called The Memorial Museum of Bender’s Tragedy, which pictures and recalls Transnistria’s struggle for independence.
