Moldova’s capital, Chisinau, is bracing for renewed protests this weekend, after several opposition parties called on supporters to take to the streets and demonstrate against the court ruling invalidating the result of the June 3 mayoral elections.
Experts say that, beyond bringing more political instability, the decision has created more distrust in the country’s much criticized justice system – and in the current government.
Andrei Nastase, candidate for the Pro-European Dignity and Truth Platform, PPDA, won the second run-off election for the mayoralty on June 3, beating the candidate of the pro-Russian Socialist Party, Ion Ceban.
