Workers at Romania’s biggest steel plant in Galati, a port on the Danube, are concerned following reports that its owner, ArcelorMittal, plans to sell it to meet EU anti-trust concerns.
“People are worried and the atmosphere in the plant is pretty tense because they don’t know what’s going to happen,” Vasile Crisan, secretary general of the local steel workers’ union, told BIRN.
Arcelor Mittal Galati is still the biggest employer in the town and in southern Romania, and rumours of a possible sale have been circulating for months after years of staff cuts and losses.
