New Faces, Old Problems, for Serbia’s Diplomatic Service

An announced changing of the guard in Serbia’s diplomatic service is drawing warnings from former diplomats that a steady decline in the calibre of the country’s embassy staff risks accelerating fast.

More than a third of Serbia’s ambassadors face being replaced when their mandates expire under a major reshuffle announced last month by Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic.

“If everyone will be revoked or some will stay, we still need to agree,” Dacic told the Serbian daily Blic. “I’ll talk about this with President Vucic. Certainly in a third of embassies there will be new cadres.”
