EU Arbitration Declaration May Save Bulgaria Huge Sums

A European Union Court of Justice ruling, ending a long-running dispute between Slovakia and a private Dutch investor, might produce a chain of events that could spare Bulgaria hundreds of millions of euros.

This might be the short-term effect of the ECJ ruling on the Slovakia vs Achmea BV case, known simply as the “Achmea case”.

Currently, four European energy companies are suing Bulgaria for unilaterally changing the prices at which it has bought energy over the last six years.

The long-term effect of the ruling, however, may be more far-reaching.
