Anniversaries of the union of the Serbian and Montenegro kingdoms on November 26, 1918, have attracted little public attention in Montenegro – until now.
But when the centenary of this event came round this year, both the ruling and opposition parties seized on it as part of their ongoing battle for hearts and minds.
The ruling Democratic Party of Socialists, DPS, condemned the proposed anniversary as an attack on the independence of Montenegro, which was restored following a referendum in 2006.
