La Blouse Roumaine: Calling Out Fashion Giants over Cultural Rip-Offs

Andreea Tanasescu had no idea what she was starting when, in 2011, she uploaded to Facebook a photo of her best friend cradling her sleeping baby.

The friend wore a white shirt, off the shoulder and bearing the intricate embroidery characteristic of a traditional Romanian Blouse, a garment beloved by Romanians as a unique symbol of national identity and thousands of years of history, but one that has been borrowed by more than a few foreign fashion designers of late.

The picture was shared and liked so many times that Tanasescu decided the blouse deserved its own Facebook fan page.

Seven years and 150,000 followers later, the page, La Blouse Roumaine, is now a major voice in a global debate over the protection of traditional costume, a grey area in the field of intellectual property and one that has tripped up some of the biggest names in fashion.
