Albania’s Vetting Commission deemed Gani Dizdari, a member of the country’s Constitutional Court, unfit for duty on Monday, 16 July.
It concluded that he was unable to prove legal sources for his declared wealth of 256,000 euros and noted his “connection with criminals” – referring to a nephew who has been jailed for acting as middleman in an attempted perversion of justice on behalf of a sentenced murderer.
Judge Dizdari, 70, was only six months away from retirement. He was also the last Constitutional Court member to face the vetting process, an extraordinary process undertaken by Albania to clean up the notoriously corrupt and inefficient justice system.
