Vucic Meets Macron Ahead of Serbia-Kosovo Talks

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is to meet France’s Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday, one day before the EU-led Serbia-Kosovo dialogue continues the following day.

The presidents of Kosovo and Serbia, Hashim Thaci and Aleksandar Vucic, will resume their EU-sponsored negotiations in Brussels after Vucic meets France’s Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday to talk about Kosovo and other issues.

“President Vucic will talk to President Macron about bilateral issues, especially economic relations between the two countries and the situation in the region, with special emphasis on the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue and Serbia’s European integration,” Vucic’s office said in a press release.

Vucic’s meeting with Macron occurs a day before Serbia continues negotiations in Brussels with its former province, which declared independence in 2008. The EU demands normalisation of their relations for their eventual membership of the EU.

Kosovo announced on Friday that Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj and other officials will also meet the EU High Representative, Frederica Mogherini, on Wednesday.

“Leaders of Kosovo institutions will confirm to Ms Mogherini their commitment … to dialogue with Serbia, as well as their commitment to involving the [Kosovo] opposition in the dialogue, in establishing an inclusive team,” the government said.

Parliament speaker Kadri Veseli also presented a document outlying “red lines” in the negotiations that Kosovo will not negotiate on – namely “its statehood, sovereignty, and territorial integrity”.

The Kosovo opposition has heavily criticised the perceived lack of transparency in the negotiations, and insists that President Thaci has no mandate to lead the dialogue. The opposition says parliament should have the main role in deciding about negotiations with Serbia.
