Thousands of Croat gathered on Monday at the main square in Zagreb to celebrate the greatest success in the entire history of Croatian football.
Croats laid on a spectacular welcome-home party for the Croatian national team after its 4-2 loss in the final of the World Cup in Russia – the furthest Croatia has ever got in the global soccer tournament.
The Croatian players greeted their delighted fans from open-air buses along a route from the airport to the main square that was lined with cheering and waving people who thronged the entire route.
Once the players reached the main square, people were clearly thrilled to catch sight of these new-found national heroes.
In a dramatic match on Sunday night in Moscow, France won 4-2. But, despite the convincing French victory, there is little feeling of disappointment in Croatia. No nation of this size has got so far in the World Cup in decades – and none has won since Uruguay’s shock win over Brazil back in 1950.
The national enthusiasm felt for this historic achievement is hard to put into words, and in cities and towns throughout Croatia hundreds of thousands of people have flooded the streets after every match.
