LGBT Activists March For Rights in Croatia, Serbia

LGBT community and activists gathered on Saturday to march for their rights in the Croatian city of Split and the Serbian capital, Belgrade.

The event in Split was organised by a union of local LGBT associations – Rispet, Bitcherin, Flomaster, queerAnarchive – under the motto “Walk for Love”.

The motto was chosen due to the growing popularity of “Walks for Life” organised by socially conservative NGOs and anti-abortion campaigners.

“We want to say how important it is to make an effort to understand things, to understand the position of others and try to put yourself in someone else’s shoes,” the organisers said in their announcement.

The parade started early in the evening at the city’s Djardin park, going through the centre of Split, ending at the Bedem Cornaro where a special program was organized.

Police secured the event. The first Split Pride parade in 2011 was marked by hostile incidents. Around 10,000 protesters threw rocks, bottles and tear gas at some 300 participants. But great advances have been made since then.

In Belgrade, the event started earlier in the day at the city’s Pionirski Park under the slogan “Maticarka, naravno”, meaning “marriage registrant, of course.” Gay marriage is still illegal in Serbia.
