Romania’s Social Democrat Party on Wednesday fired its social media chief for creating and spreading a fake video on Facebook.
Romania’s ruling Social Democrat Party chief Liviu Dragnea on Wednesday said that he had fired the party’s social media chief, former journalist George Harabagiu, after accusations that he had created and disseminated a fake video on several party Facebook accounts to save Bucharest Mayor Gabriela Firea’s reputation.
“I’ve fired him,” Dragnea said during a short interview with Antena3 news channel on Wednesday afternoon.
The clip was shared on several Social Democrat Party branches’ Facebook accounts, after thousands of Romanians booed Bucharest Mayor Gabriela Firea at a Monday evening rally organized by Bucharest City Hall to celebrate tennis player Simona Halep who won the Roland Garos tournament on Saturday.
The crowd acclaimed Halep, but booed Firea during her speech, accusing her of using Halep’s success for political gain and forcing her to leave the stadium before the event ended.
Following the incident, Firea closed her Facebook account due to the heavy criticism she received from Halep’s fans as well as Rezist movement activists.
