Romania Plays Hardball With EU Over Justice Changes

Ignoring protests from the European Commission and local experts and activists, Romania’s parliament passed a set of laws on Monday that are widely seen as posing a threat to the independence of the country’s justice system.

Romania’s ruling Social Democrat Party, PSD has retaliated against Brussels, accusing it of interfering in the country’s domestic affairs and of pressuring the government into prosecuting high-profile corruption cases.

The controversial legislation passed through parliament’s lower chamber under emergency procedure last Wednesday, despite protests from opposition parties.

This is the second time that PSD MPs have been pushing these bills through parliament, which already approved the same set of laws in mid-December 2017, also under emergency procedures.
