Vienna has been named the world’s most livable city for the ninth year in a row. In Mercer’s 20th annual Quality of Living survey, the Austrian capital dominated, followed by Zurich, Auckland and Munich in joint third place, and Vancouver in fifth. The survey evaluates 39 factors including crime, healthcare, schools and education, housing, and public services and transportation. Scroll down to see the rest of the top 10.
The top-ranked city provides its residents with “high security, well-structured public transportation, and a variety of cultural and recreation facilities,” Mercer explained in a press release.
The city placed fifth worldwide in the “City Sanitation” ranking.
Munich moved up the ranking this year thanks to “a concerted effort to attract talent and businesses by continuously investing in high-tech infrastructure and promoting its cultural facilities.”
Vancouver is one of three Canadian cities in the top 20, and all beat out the highest-ranking U.S. city of San Francisco (number 30).
Four German cities (Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Berlin, and Hamburg) made the top 20.
The fifth-largest city in Germany placed seventh.
The city is home to the headquarters of Europe’s United Nations and the Red Cross.
Denmark’s capital and most populous city is also its most livable.
Three Swiss cities made the top 10, and Bern isn’t far behind in 14th place.
