Moldova’s Foreign Trade Rose Sharply in 2017

The volume of Moldova’s imports and exports rose by almost a fifth in 2017, data show – as trade with European markets replaces that with the Russian-led Commonwealth of Independent States.

The volume of Moldova’s foreign trade increased by almost 20 per cent in 2017, with both imports and exports increasing, according to the National Institute of Statistics.

Last year, the former Soviet republic exported goods worth 2.42 billion US dollars – 18.6 per cent more than in 2016.

Some 65.8 per cent of exports went to European Union markets, while the share of exports to the Russian-led Commonwealth of Independent States, CIS fell below 20 per cent.

The value of goods exported to EU countries amounted to 1.59 billion US dollars in 2017, just over 19 per cent more than in 2016.

The volume of imports increased in 2017 by 20 per cent, exceeding 4.8 billion US dollars in value.

Nearly half of all goods imported by Moldova came from EU countries and a quarter from CIS countries.

Romania was also the main trading partner of Moldova in 2017, with a trading volume of almost 1.3 billion US dollars, up 20 per cent in comparison with 2016.

Russia followed, with 726 million US dollars, an increase of about 7 per cent, followed by Ukraine – 577 million US dollars, Italy – 567 million US dollars, and Germany – 556 million US dollars.
