Prosecutors in Serbia and Kosovo have agreed to share information on the investigation into the killing of the prominent Kosovo Serb politician Oliver Ivanovic, who was shot dead last week.
Serbia’s organised crime prosecutor’s office on Monday said the Kosovo prosecution had agreed to exchange information on the investigation into the murder of Kosovo Serb politician Oliver Ivanovic.
The Kosovo prosecutor’s office in Mitrovica, the town in northern Kosovo where Ivanovic was shot dead on January 16, said it would share information on the investigation into the death of the leader of the Freedom, Democracy, Justice party.
“The [Serbian] prosecution has received, through EULEX and Serbia’s Justice Ministry, the decision … expressing readiness to share all information at the disposal of the Mitrovica Basic Prosecutor’s office,” the Serbian prosecution said in a press release.
The Serbian prosecution said that the information-sharing means that the investigation will be “coordinated”.
Kosovo authorities previously rejected Serbia’s demand to participate in the investigation, which it interpreted as a demand to interfere in Kosovo’s internal and judicial affairs.
Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008 but Serbia does not recognise its former province’s statehood.
Ivanovic, a prominent Kosovo Serb politician, was shot dead in front of his party’s offices in Mitrovica.
He was seen as a political moderate in Kosovo who advocated coexistence between its Serbian minority and Albanian majority.
However, he had also faced trial for ordering the murder of Kosovo Albanians in 1999, during Kosovo’s war of independence.
